Walls with Paint: Black & white

In 'Walls with Paint', Eindhoven local, photographer, and art fan Lukedaduke shares the story behind a special street art project in Eindhoven. This month: a black-and-white line play on Boutenslaan.

Do you remember the summer of 2020? That hot one? During that summer, Aam Solleveld and her assistants painted the bicycle tunnel underneath Boutenslaan.

The tunnel is small and narrow, and there is little room left for pedestrians, but the architecture itself is striking. The municipality of Eindhoven wanted to repair the tunnel's concrete, improve the water drainage, and give the tunnel a visual update.

Through the Rotterdam agency of Murals Inc., which represents a broad pallet of artists, they chose the abstract design by Aam Solleveld.

Aam Solleveld is an artist from Amsterdam who studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and the Sandberg Instituut.

She designs site-specific pieces that interact with its surroundings and of which you, as a viewer, are part of the artwork. Her work characterizes itself by using linework, grids, and repetition of geometrical shapes.

You can experience her work in the tunnel underneath the Boutenslaan. The lines follow the shapes of the tunnel. These same lines ensure that users of the tunnel can focus on their route.

The black and white colors make sure that you are visible to the other tunnel users.

So, do you feel like riding your bike in Eindhoven on a nice day? Don't skip this tunnel.
